Here at Melbourn Village College we run an extensive enrichment programme with a wide range of opportunities on offer.
We believe that exceptional education extends far beyond the classroom. Our enrichment programme is designed to inspire ambition, deepen intellectual curiosity and give every student the confidence to pursue excellence in a wide range of fields. Through academic challenge, creative opportunity, leadership and personal development, students are encouraged to discover new strengths, develop independence and prepare for future success in an increasingly competitive world.
Enrichment plays a vital role in shaping students who are not only academically successful, but also thoughtful, resilient and outward-looking young people. Whether leading a team, performing on stage, exploring new cultures or extending their learning beyond the curriculum, students are encouraged to show curiosity by embracing new ideas, resilience by rising to challenge and kindness by contributing positively to the wider community.
For Year 9 students seeking an academically challenging pathway, the Super Curriculum offers an advanced programme in Key Stage 4, designed to extend learning beyond the standard timetable. Students may select this pathway in Year 9, providing the opportunity to study:
- GCSE Astronomy
- GCSE Further Mathematics
- GCSE Statistics
- GCSE RE Short Course
All of these subjects offer considerable intellectual challenge and provide a strong foundation for progression to A Level and higher education.
The programme is carefully structured to foster intellectual confidence, independence, and academic rigour. Students demonstrate curiosity through engagement with complex subject matter, resilience through sustained commitment beyond the classroom, and collaboration by working alongside like-minded peers in a supportive learning environment.
Participation in the Super Curriculum enables students to pursue their academic potential to the fullest, preparing them for advanced study and equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and discipline required for future success.
Sport is an important part of school life and offers students opportunities to develop teamwork, discipline and personal ambition through both participation and competition. Our excellent facilities include two sports halls, a dance studio, a 20-metre swimming pool, tennis courts and a 4G pitch, allowing students to access a broad and varied sporting programme throughout the year.
A wide range of clubs and teams are available, including tennis, football and water polo, alongside many other opportunities for students to represent the school and develop their skills. Through sport, students demonstrate kindness by supporting teammates, curiosity by embracing new activities and resilience by striving to improve performance through commitment and practice.
Educational visits are an integral part of our enrichment programme, extending learning beyond the classroom and providing students with opportunities to engage directly with the wider world. Our trips are carefully designed to develop curiosity, resilience, and collaboration, while also offering memorable experiences that complement students’ academic and personal development.
Sporting Trips
Students have the opportunity to participate in skiing trips and other sports-focused excursions, promoting physical resilience, determination, and teamwork. These experiences allow students to develop skills beyond the classroom while pursuing both personal and competitive goals.
In addition to skiing, students may attend trips to watch professional basketball games, providing inspiration, insight into elite sport, and opportunities to experience teamwork and strategy in a professional setting.
Academic and Cultural Visits
Our programme of educational trips allows students to apply classroom learning in real-world contexts. Language immersion trips to China and Spain support students’ linguistic and cultural understanding, particularly for those studying Mandarin or Spanish. GCSE History trips to Germany and Poland give students first-hand experience of historical sites, enabling them to deepen their understanding of key historical events and contexts.
Enrichment and Reward Trips
Additional trips, including theatre visits and reward-based excursions, enrich students’ cultural experiences and celebrate achievement. These visits encourage curiosity, confidence, and a sense of belonging within the wider school community.
Through this diverse programme of trips and visits, students are encouraged to explore new environments, collaborate with peers, and develop skills and experiences that support their academic, personal, and social growth.
Our students participate in structured team-building activities designed to foster collaboration, leadership, and confidence. These include local excursions such as bowling and outdoor adventure activities, as well as residential experience for Year 7 students at Grafham Water, where students develop resilience and teamwork through a variety of challenges and outdoor pursuits.
We are proud to be a part of the Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP), an elite national initiative delivered by the UCL Institute of Education in partnership with the British Council and the Department for Education. The MEP gives students the opportunity to develop fluency in Mandarin Chinese through a combination of classroom teaching, intensive study, self-study and immersive cultural experiences.
Our Year 9 MEP students benefit from a trip to China, gaining first-hand experience of the language and culture, and the programme supports progression from GCSE Mandarin to A Level study. Participation encourages students to show curiosity through exploring a global language, resilience through mastering challenging linguistic skills, and kindness through intercultural understanding and collaboration.
Being part of the MEP ensures our students access a world-class language programme that prepares them for future academic and career opportunities, connecting them with a global network of peers and teachers. The Duke of Edinburgh Award provides students with a nationally recognised opportunity to develop leadership, independence and perseverance. Since its foundation in 1956 by Prince Philip, the award has enabled generations of young people to challenge themselves through volunteering, physical activity, skill development and expedition.
Participation encourages students to demonstrate resilience as they step beyond their comfort zone, solve problems collaboratively and remain determined when faced with challenge. The programme also develops kindness through service to others and curiosity through new experiences that broaden confidence and independence. It is a personal challenge available to all, not a competition against others.
At Melbourn Village College we are proud to offer Bronze & Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. We currently offer Bronze to Year 9 students and Silver to Year 10 students.
At each level there are the following sections:
- Volunteering – to encourage service to individuals and to the community
- Physical Recreation – to encourage participation and improvement in physical activity
- Skills – to encourage the development of personal interests, hobbies and social and practical skills
- Expedition – to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery.
The Duke of Edinburgh Lead at Melbourn Village College is Mr Hodgson. For more details of the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Melbourn Village College please email [email protected] to contact Mr Hodgson.
