At Melbourn Village College, we are committed to ensuring that every pupil in Key Stage 4 achieves their very best. Our Raising Achievement (RA) strategy is designed to support pupils in attaining the highest grades, making strong progress, and securing their next ambitious steps. We use assessment and data in the classroom to ensure teaching is focused, effective, and responsive to each pupil’s needs.
Quality teaching
We believe great teaching is the foundation of success:
- Core subjects are taught by specialist teachers with strong subject knowledge.
- Teachers benefit from ongoing professional development, including training as examiners for their exam boards and external moderation with trained examiners.
- Trust wide moderation in core subject mock examinations.
- Intervention and booster sessions provide extra support from subject specialists to close gaps and stretch high achievers.
We track every pupil’s progress carefully:
- Formative assessment data identifies areas for improvement quickly.
- Teaching and interventions are adjusted in response to this data.
- Pupils receive the guidance and support they need to reach ambitious targets by their teachers.
Quality data tracking
- Raising Achievement Board – a multidisciplinary team meets weekly in the Spring term to review Year 11 progress and plan targeted support.
- Ambitious Target Setting – high expectations for all to aim for the top grades.
- Termly Performance Summit – Trust-level meetings to monitor outcomes, share best practice, and maintain high expectations.
- Regular Updates for Parents and Carers – newsletters keep Year 11 families informed about progress, key dates, and ways to support learning at home.
- Data Analysis – rigorous review of summative assessment results guide strategic interventions.
- Mock Examinations – summative assessments for Years 10 and 11 provide practice under exam conditions and highlight areas for improvement, including an additional set of mock examinations in core subjects.
Careers Guidance
Preparing pupils for their next steps is an important part of our strategy:
- Careers Interviews – one-to-one meetings for Year 10 and 11 pupils to explore options and make informed choices.
- Work Experience – Year 10 placements give pupils first-hand insight into the workplace.
- MVC Futures Talks – professionals visit each half term to share experiences and inspire students about future careers.
Through this structured and ambitious approach, Key Stage 4 pupils at MVC are challenged to achieve high grades, supported to excel, and equipped to secure their next ambitious steps.
