Careers at the core: Guiding every student towards their future
At Melbourn Village College, careers education is about far more than choosing a job. It’s about helping students discover their interests, develop their strengths and build the confidence to shape their own futures. Alongside our MVC Futures Programme, we offer a comprehensive careers curriculum that broadens horizons, sparks ambition and ensures every student is informed and prepared for their next steps.
Our careers programme by year group
Year 7 – Whose line is it anyway?
A lively introduction to the world of work, encouraging students to explore a wide range of job roles and understand how they connect to everyday life.
Year 8 – ‘Take your child to work’ day and careers carousel
Students gain first‑hand experience of the workplace, followed by a careers carousel where they meet professionals from a variety of industries.
Year 9 – Enterprise day and post‑16/18 visits
A creative, collaborative day where students tackle business challenges, alongside visits to colleges and universities to explore future pathways.
Year 10 – One‑to‑one careers interviews and sixth form visits
Students receive personalised guidance through individual careers interviews and take part in visits to local sixth forms and colleges.
Year 11 – Careers support and open evenings
Ongoing tailored support as students prepare for life after MVC. We help with applications, provide advice on sixth form, college and apprenticeships, and encourage attendance at open evenings and careers events.
All students have access to impartial, independent careers advice delivered by a Level 6 qualified external careers adviser, supported by our teaching and pastoral staff. We encourage every student to aim high, explore a broad range of career areas and consider the full range of educational and personal development routes.
For some, this may include mentoring for applications to selective universities; for others, it may involve guidance towards vocational, technical or talent‑based pathways. Our aim is to support every student in finding the route that is right for them.
Choosing a future pathway can feel overwhelming. We are committed to helping every student find the option that suits them best—whether that’s sixth form, college, an apprenticeship or entering the world of work. Parents may also find expert guidance through Youth Employment UK, which offers clear advice on supporting young people with their next steps.
All Year 10 students complete a week of work experience in July. Placement forms and information leaflets can be downloaded from the menu on the left.
