At Melbourn Village College, we are committed to ensuring every pupil, regardless of background, achieves excellent outcomes and makes strong progress. With 24% of our pupils classified as ‘disadvantaged,’ we recognise the challenges many face and work tirelessly to minimise barriers through high‑quality teaching, robust pastoral care, and targeted interventions.
We have developed a comprehensive strategy built around six key areas:
- Quality First Teaching Great teaching is the foundation of success. We invest in extensive CPD and a dedicated teaching and learning team to refine classroom practice. Intervention and booster sessions provide targeted support from subject specialists.
- High‑Quality Pastoral Care Pupils learn best when they feel safe and supported. Our pastoral system and tutor time programme foster care, security, and essential study skills.
- Rigorous Data Monitoring We track progress closely, using assessment data to identify gaps and adjust teaching and interventions quickly.
- Improving Literacy and Reading Literacy underpins achievement. Programmes such as Lexonik and IDL help pupils below age‑related expectations to build decoding skills, reading speed, and comprehension. Lexonik alone has delivered average gains of 24 months in just six weeks.
- Engaging Parents and Carers Success is strongest when families are involved. We provide clear communication, revision guidance, and mental health resources to help parents support learning at home.
- Study Support and Mock Exams GCSE preparation is demanding. Our Study Support programme offers drop‑in and targeted sessions to consolidate knowledge and build effective study habits. Formal mock exams in November prepare pupils for the pressure and conditions of real exams, with timetables and revision lists shared in advance.
