Special educational needs (SEND)

At Melbourn Village College, we aim to work with all students in ways that enhance self‑esteem and confidence, encouraging them to take responsibility for themselves and their learning.

We are an inclusive school and make thoughtful adaptations to both mainstream education and the wider environment so that every student can thrive. All pupils have the opportunity to participate fully in school life, and we actively support access to extra‑curricular activities without barriers.

The wellbeing of our students is central to our work. We provide tailored support for those with social, emotional, or mental health needs by getting to know our young people well and offering access to a wide range of internal and external services.

  • Mr Luxton – Assistant Principal, SENCo Strategic lead for SEND provision and inclusion across the school. Oversees literacy development and works to raise outcomes for all students at Key Stage 4.
  • Mr French – Inclusion Lead Responsible for the day‑to‑day management of SEND provision, including the Student Support Centre and The Cabin. Leads and develops our team of Teaching Assistants.
  • Mrs Vinci – SEND Administrator Manages SEN records, supports communication between staff, families, and external agencies, organises review meetings, and ensures smooth administration. Also oversees exam access arrangements and post‑16 transition for SEND students.

Our SEND department specialises in:

  • Targeted interventions for specific learning difficulties
  • Developing fine and gross motor skills, alongside social skills
  • Enhancing communication and language development
  • Supporting pupils with emotional or social difficulties, including mental health needs

Parents and carers of students with or without SEND are warmly invited to contact the School Office to arrange a tour and discuss individual needs. Once an application is made, further meetings can be organised to ensure a smooth transition. Even if Melbourn is named on your child’s EHCP, we ask that you complete our admissions paperwork to help us prepare effectively.

We offer a graduated transition, with a bespoke number of visits of differing durations—sometimes with parents, carers, teachers, or teaching assistants—to build confidence ahead of joining us.

For parents/carers of students with an EHC plan and a primary diagnosis of Autism who are interested in a place in The Cabin.
